Kopenhagen and the Danish Island Roadtrip: From vibrant Copenhagen through flat lands

Sweden 🇸🇪

Uddevalla 21.10.2024 🇸🇪

Hardly have we crossed the border when it turns stormy and rainy… Sweden greets us just as we left it almost two months ago in Kiruna. But it is autumn, and actually the weather fits the surroundings quite well. Still, being outside in this kind of weather isn’t really that much fun, unless… you go and look at ancient rock carvings. The rock carvings in Vitlycke are well known far and wide and, despite the rain, there are quite a few visitors. We are among them and marvel at the many well-preserved carvings. The park is very nicely laid out and is certainly a great excursion destination in sunny weather. We complete our tour until it also becomes too wet for us and the rock carvings slowly disappear beneath the falling leaves. Now we need something warm, so we head to Gustavsberg to a bakery with good coffee and a little something for our love handles.

Lindome 22.10.2024 🇸🇪

On the way heading south, we leave Gothenburg to our left, grab a not-so-great coffee at IKEA and cover some distance. Our pitch for today is beautifully located, a bit hidden in a spot by the sea… and in autumn, sea also means windy! And there’s plenty of that… wind. Time to buckle up and brace for the rocking. Once again, our Joey doesn’t tip over and, after a night of being thoroughly shaken, we wake up to a great view.

Skummeslov 23.10.2024 🇸🇪

Today we once again have a somewhat more “luxurious” campsite. We are staying at Lögnäs Gard, a farm/hotel. A really wonderful little spot… if only it weren’t so windy again. A short walk to the next little village for a coffee and on the way back we enjoy the gorgeous sunset. And tomorrow we’ll once again have a shower with no time limit.. In the evening it gets a bit stormier, but luckily the wind dies down a bit around midnight.

Malmö 24.10.2024 🇸🇪

Today is our last day in Sweden and then we’re already heading to Denmark. Our last stop before Denmark is Malmö, or rather Oxie, a small town just outside Malmö. We’re staying with our Joey in a nature park with hiking trails. Despite being close to Malmö, it is very quiet; on the large site there are no more than three vehicles. In return, there are all the more pheasants! They are quite shy, but after a few minutes they keep reappearing. We go for a short walk in the woods… actually, we do it twice because it’s quite short. Apparently, some of the oldest trees in Sweden are supposed to be here. Afterwards, we simply enjoy the peace and quiet of the forest.

Dänemark 🇩🇰

Kopenhagen 24.10.2024 🇩🇰

From Malmö, the route leads over the Øresund Bridge to Denmark. Our elk takes one last look at his homeland, and he doesn’t know if he will ever see it again…. As on the outward journey, the drive over the bridge is something very special, the view is truly unique, and the weather is on our side today. Our destination is Copenhagen, but it’s best to go there by train. So first we head to Roskilde, about 30 km outside the city center, and then back into town by train.
Copenhagen is a truly vibrant city with a very special charm. Just strolling through the alleys and enjoying it all—if only the driver’s back hadn’t suddenly started hurting… But over lunch this is quickly forgotten… because we are celebrating Adriana’s birthday! In the old part of town, we find a cozy restaurant by the river, where we enjoy the food and delight in the great weather.
Afterwards we head to the castle and the Little Mermaid and and and…. After a good 15 km we are tired and happy to be back on the train to Roskilde.

Roskilde 26.10.2024 🇩🇰

And because it was so nice, we are staying another night in Roskilde and taking a city tour today. Roskilde has around 50,000 inhabitants and is located on the island of Sjælland, or in German, Seeland. The city is easy to take in at a glance, but it has a lot to offer. In addition to the town itself, we are visiting the Viking Ship Museum and the famous grounds of the Roskilde Music Festival… or rather, everything that can be seen for free. That’s just how it is for long-term travelers…..

Odense 26.10.2024 🇩🇰

On our way towards Aarhus, we also make a stop in the city of Odense. With just over 180,000 inhabitants, Odense is the second-largest city in Denmark. We stop on a gravel lot just outside Odense, have a small bite to eat, and then set off. Like all the Danish cities we’ve seen so far, Odense also has a very beautiful old town, but since we’ve already visited quite a few, this tour is a bit shorter. Afterwards, we continue on to Aarhus, where we have our pitch for the night today.

Jelling 27.10.2024 🇩🇰

Before we continue today, we’re heading to the local museum, the Rune Stones of Jelling. The Jelling rune stones are two rune stones from the 10th century. They are the most important stones for the history of Denmark and were erected at the initiative of the kings Gorm and Harald Bluetooth. The large Jelling stone contains a depiction of Christ and an animal. The entire site is relatively large and also includes two mounds, two graves, and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994 and… it has good coffee. Now it’s a matter of setting priorities, which isn’t hard in this weather.

Aarhus 27.10.2024 🇩🇰

Our pitch for today is nothing special, just a parking lot at a sports stadium. We are “expected” at our spot, which is rated as quiet, by a large number of motorhomes. There is currently a cyclocross race taking place and of course we have to see it too! Afterwards we head to Aarhus, another big city. Fortunately it’s Sunday and everything is closed… “window shopping” is fun too.
A bit tired from all the city sightseeing of the last few weeks, we soon set off back “home” and in the meantime our spot has become pleasantly quiet again….

Aalborg 29.10.2024 🇩🇰

After Aarhus comes Aalborg, another city. In a gravel parking lot a little outside the city we find a nice place to stay. Of course, we also want to see Aalborg and immediately take a short walk around. However, it is already getting dark early and we postpone the city tour until tomorrow.
After a very quiet night, we set off the next morning and are not disappointed. Aalborg also has a very beautiful old town, is not too big and seems to come to life later in the morning.
After an extensive walk, we continue on to Hals on the Danish east coast. We then stay there for a little longer

Hals 30.10.2024 🇩🇰

Over the next few days, we will take a little break from the nomadic life and stay in the same place for five nights. We have rented a small cottage near Hals and will relax here, enjoy ourselves, go cycling, go hiking, and simply unwind. The cottage is really cosy, very modernly furnished and offers everything you need to relax.

Hals 31.10.2024 🇩🇰

The four days in Hals have been truly relaxing. By bike or on foot, we explore the stunning coastal landscape and enjoy, for once, having a bit more space. The weather is on our side too; the days are still quite mild, but it’s slowly getting colder. Besides relaxing, there’s of course always something to do. Adriana gets Joey shining again on the inside, and I can take care of a few pending jobs on the chassis. Despite everything, we’re naturally also looking forward to continuing our journey.

Viborg 03.11.2024 🇩🇰

In the middle of a small nature park, we find a place to stay for the night. After the days by the sea, we enjoy a walk in the woods and the autumn atmosphere in the park. A few more photos and a few videos with the drone, and then we head back to Joey. The spot is really quiet, from time to time a car that loses its way, but otherwise completely still… until about 3:00 a.m., when a shot wakes us up. After that things really kick off. A little way off you can see the lights of at least two vehicles, and suddenly shots ring out from all directions. What on earth is that? Hunters, probably not, because they don’t need machine guns. There’s no military nearby either… For us the situation gets a bit too hot, because the whole thing is less than 500 m away, and we sneak away as quietly as we can. Best to head straight to the next town, Viborg, where we find a nice, quiet spot. Well then, good night!

Viborg 05.11.2024 🇩🇰

After all the excitement of last night, we are enjoying today in Viborg, a small town with typical Danish charm. The weather isn’t exactly great – cold and wet – but we’re not letting that get us down. The day passes far too quickly, and we decide to spend another night in the same spot.

Esbjerg 05.11.2024 🇩🇰

From Viborg we head to Esbjerg, a city on the west coast. We had actually wanted to go to Billund to Legoland, but unfortunately it’s already closed. So we’re off to Esbjerg. With no expectations and only because I knew the place from one of my previous jobs, we decided on this detour. And it was worth it! Esbjerg has a lot to offer and we explore the city several times. The pitch at the harbor is not exactly “romantic” but it’s perfect for a city visit.

Rømø 05.11.2024 🇩🇰

If we’re ever on the west coast, we naturally don’t skip Rømø. A paradise for endless walks on the beach. Despite the time of year and the rather dreary weather, there are quite a few people on the beach, and by chance we even meet a couple who have the same camper as we do.
One could stay here forever, especially in nice weather…. In the afternoon, however, we move on, because now it’s back to Germany.
